50th Birthday Gifts For Him
Pep was a gift to Pennsylvania Governor Gifford Pinchot from the nephew of his wife Cornelia Bryce Pinchot. Her relative was a breeder of Labrador Retrievers. During Pinchot's first gubernatorial term (1923–1927), Pep became a part of his household. But soon the dog began demonstrating a fondness for chewing on the cushions of the front porch sofa. No amount of scolding could stop Pep.
Pinchot decided that Pep had to go, but for the sake of family harmony he did not want to end the dog's life. Fortunately,an official trip gave him the idea for a convenient way of getting the dog out of his home. On a visit to Maine, Pinchot had seen dogs that were used as therapy to help inmates. So when the governor got back to Pennsylvania he decided to give the troublesome Pep to Eastern State Penitentiary as a pet.
Pep Goes to Prison
By the 1900s, some inmates at Eastern State had pets such as birds, pigeons and at least one mouse. Dogs were used as guard dogs, of course. Before Pep arrived, it is not known how many, if any, dogs had been kept as pets for the prisoners. The inmates were said to be fond of Pep.
